Classroom Guidance

Classroom Guidance Lessons is a big part of what I do as a school counselor. I see each class about once a month. Below are the competencies addressed for each grade level. For more information about all the competencies addressed please check out the links below. I will try to update the main blog from time to time to share what classes are doing to learn the competencies.

North Carolina Essential Standards- Guidance

Kindergarten 
Academic:
     - Display a positive interest in learning.
     - Use communication skills to know when and how to ask for help when needed.
     - Demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively with other students.
Personal/Social
    - Identify and express feelings.
    - Recognize personal boundaries, rights and privacy needs.
    - Demonstrate cooperative behavior in groups.
Career
    - Learn about the variety of traditional and non-traditional occupations.
    - Learn to make decisions
    - Develop a positive attitude toward work and learning.

First Grade
Academic
    - Articulate feelings of competence and confidence as learners.
    - Identify attitudes and behaviors which lead to successful learning.
    - Take responsibility for their actions.
Personal/Social
    - Distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate behaviors.
    - Use effective communication skills.
    - Learn the difference between appropriate and inappropriate physical contact.
Career
   - Learn about the variety of traditional and non-traditional occupations.
   - Learn to make decisions.
   - Develop a positive attitude toward work and learning.

Second Grade
Academic
   - Accept mistakes as essential to the learning process.
   - Demonstrate dependability, productivity, and initiative.
   - Understand the relationship between classroom performance and success in school.
Personal/Social
   - Understand the need for self-control and how to practice it.
   - Know that communication involves speaking, listening, and nonverbal behavior.
   - Understand consequences of decisions and choices.
Career
   - Learn how to interact and work cooperatively in teams.
   - Learn to make decisions.
   - Learn how to set goals.

Third Grade
Academic
   - Apply time management and task management skills.
   - Demonstrate how effort and persistence positively.
   - Use problem-solving and decision-making skills assess progress toward educational goals.
Personal/Social
   - Learn how to make and keep friends.
   - Know how to apply conflict resolution skills.
   - Use persistence and perseverance in acquiring knowledge and skills.
Career
   - Learn how to set goals.
   - Learn how to use conflict management skills with peers and adults.
   - Learn to work cooperatively with other as a time member.

Fourth Grade
Academic
   - Share knowledge.
   - Apply the study skills necessary for academic success at each level.
   - Become self-directed and independent learners.
Personal/Social
   - Know when peer pressure is influencing a decision.
   - Identify alternative ways of achieving goals.
   - Learn techniques for managing stress and conflict.
Career
   - Learn how to set goals.
   - Learn how to use conflict management skills with peers and adults.
   - Learn to work cooperatively with others as a team.

Fifth Grade
Academic
   - Develop a broad range of interests and abilities.
   - Demonstrate the motivation to achieve individual potential.
   - Apply knowledge of aptitudes and interests to goal setting.
Personal/Social
   -Identify personal strengths and assets.
   - Identify long and short term goals.
   - Learn how to cope with peer pressure.
Career
   - Develop an awareness of personal abilities, skills, interests, and motivations.
   - Understand the importance of responsibility, dependability, punctuality, integrity, and effort in the workplace.
   - Utilize time and task management skills.
